Learning To Listen Before Your Body Has To Shout

When your body feels like it’s breaking down, it is a clear signal to stop.

Stop what you’re doing – whether it’s the hustle of business, a repetitive routine, or something that has been silently, underneath the surface, putting strain on your body for years.

Whatever it is:

Stop. Pause. And listen.

___

You Are More Than Your Head

The body carries tremendous wisdom, and yet so many of us move through life as though we don’t actually inhabit a body.

One of the shamans I’ve studied with over the years has observed that when he looks at Westerners, he sees a bunch of really large heads and tiny little bodies – walking around, overpowered by the brain.

Everybody’s energy is up in the head, up in the head, up in the head.

And yet, when you connect with the wisdom of the heart – with the neurological intelligence that lives in the chest – and when you connect with what’s called gut wisdom, that instinctive, intuitive self that lives in the body (our second brain) – that’s when you’re really living.

Why?

Because when you live from this connected place, you’re living from the place that actually experiences life through the five senses. The place that one of my mentors, Tama Kieves, delightfully calls the “flesh temple” – your body.

___

The Power of the Now Lives in the Body

When you’re living life on all cylinders, you have the ability to access the true power of the present moment.

Life doesn’t happen in the past or in the future. It happens now. And when you’re connected in the now, you move through life from a far more powerful place than when you’re caught in your head.

When you’re stuck in the head, you’re caught in repetitive cycles. You can’t sense the world around you. You spin on a hamster wheel of your own making.

Life becomes so much harder to navigate – not only because you’re disconnected from the five senses that offer a wealth of unspoken information, but also because you’re disconnected from the wisdom that the heart and body have to offer.

I see it time and time again in somatic sessions: unbelievable wisdom that comes through my clients when they actually stop, turn inward, and listen.

The key is learning how to trust what your body is trying to communicate.

___

You Were Never Taught to Trust Yourself

One of the points of frustration I hear from clients is this: “I was never taught how to listen to my body – what gives?”

And beyond that: “I was never taught to trust the messages I knew to be true for me.”

You weren’t born into this world as a giant head. You were born into this world residing in a human body. And over time, you were taught not to trust your instincts – not to trust your intuition, not to trust what you feel.

You were taught to follow the logical path, to think your way through – often at the cost of ignoring what you felt to be true inside.

Look for the answers outside of yourself – that was the subliminal message. And many of you did exactly that, until it became habit. So gradually that you stopped noticing it altogether.

Until one day, something shook you out of the trance.

That something could have been an injury, an illness, or an unexpected life circumstance. Whatever it was, that experience burst the “head bubble” and beckoned another way to live, another way to be.

But if you didn’t know how to live from an embodied place – what then?

___

What If You Learned Another Way?

What if you had a guide – someone to hold space for you, to teach you, to help you learn how to trust what lives inside of you?

How might your life shift?

How might your health shift?

How might your sense of living on purpose shift?

The possibilities are endless. And yet, taking that first step toward trusting yourself can feel absolutely terrifying, especially when you’ve spent your whole life in a society that preaches looking outside yourself for answers.

So – what if you took that chance? What if you turned within and listened?

You can begin right now. And the more you do it, the more it becomes an innate habit and practice – just as living in your head has become a habit.

The more you practice stopping, pausing, listening, and heeding the messages that come through you, the more that will become your habitual way of showing up in life.

Support Is Available – Even Virtually

For those of you who feel that some support would help along the way, that is exactly what my work is here for. And you don’t need to be in the same room to experience it!

While many in-person clients have experienced hybrid sessions – half coaching, half bodywork – the vast majority of my BodyMind Method™ Embodiment Coaching sessions are done virtually. This form of coaching is just as powerful virtually, because ultimately, it’s about helping you access what’s already inside of you.

___

Consistency Creates Lasting Change

As with bodywork, the people who make the most progress in somatic coaching are the ones who show up with regularity.

One session alone may be revealing, but if you want to live differently, consistent practice matters deeply. That’s why I offer three different coaching containersto help foster lasting change in a way that works for your life.

In the meantime…

Stop.

Become aware of your surroundings.

Breathe.

Now take that first step inward and feel your feet on the surface you’re standing on.

Clench your toes.

Then release them.

Breathe.

Practice alternating between toe clenching, releasing the clench and breathing for a few rounds.

Then simply notice what you feel.

What’s shifted for you in just those few short moments?

Now move forward through your day from that new place of awareness and experience what unfolds.

Until next time, be well and take good care of you.
